thanks to the chumash museum in thousand oaks

thirteen millennia their gentle stay

coexisting with Earth, the human way

but one hundred years–

that’s all it took

for Death by White Man, Colonial Crooks

fast forward a bit, Conejo Valley ’13,

a very different white man weeps

while unearned bounty aloofly, he reaps

torn with ire, inflamed with rage

pivoting he faces

diverse allies are made

arm in arm

pen, shield and fist

the people emerge and valiant

RESIST

parking lot vacant, flagpoles bare

Indigenous echoes faint in the air

untold sorrow forgotten in time

The Chumash, once here

live on but in rhyme.
